Biography

Since graduating from Glasgow University in joint Music and Theatre Studies, I trained at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, as well as with Angela de Castro and Spymonkey. I have also participated in Marissa Carnesky’s Finishing School for Cabaret Artists, Company of Wolves’ Winter Training and with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble in New York. I have been the recipient of a Michael Grandage Futures Fund; Dewar Arts Fund; National Theatre of Scotland Starter Award; IdeasTap Innovators Award; and a Jerwood Arts Fellowship.

Devising / performing credits include WhirlyGig and The Voice Thief (both Catherine Wheels), Lost in Music and Gossip From the Forest (both Magnetic North) and The Red Shoes (The Letter J). I have participated in Magnetic North’s Rough Mix Lab numerous times, once as Emerging Artist, and twice as a performer. I am a core ensemble member of Shotput Theatre and have been developing two new projects with them this year - Three Sisters and Discoteque (see here). In 2015 I co-devised and originated the role of Palliative Claire in Liz Carr’s groundbreaking Assisted Suicide the Musical - a commission by Unlimited Festival - which opened at The Southbank Centre before touring the UK and to Melbourne Comedy Festival (The Malthouse) in 2017.

As part of Snap - Elastic, I have co-created and performed in Puffin - which toured Scotland in 2018 - and EAT ME, which premiered at MANIPULATE Festival in 2022. EAT ME also exists as an art film, and was selected for Prague International Film Festival and Kiez Berlin Festival, winning Best Experimental Film and an honourable mention respectively. Our new show, Crash//Catapult//Float was originally developed in Stamsund with Nordland Visual Theatre and with support from Puppet Animation Scotland’s Creative Fund. It will be presented as part installation - part live performance piece at festivals in early 2024.

From 2020 - 2022 I was a Jerwood Fellow with Imaginate and Oily Cart - a period of funded research, training and work experience focusing on making sensory work for young disabled audiences. During this time, I began devising a new show called Dussskk - a musikdrama for young people aged 11-13 with additional support needs, specifically created for those who enjoy sound and seek sensory aural experiences. Charting the progress of a single day and night cycle, Dussskk is inspired by difficult transition periods, emotional shifts and the magic of the inbetween.

My time as a Jerwood Fellow has also led me to work on a number of really exciting new projects for disabled children, including Immersing in Tactile Sound (Shiori Usui) - a sensory musical piece in a hydropool - and developing the early stages of Parked (*working title) by Oily Cart. From 2022 - 2023 I was commissioned by Mahogany Opera to create an opera with and for the pupils at an ASN school in Kendal. Collaborating with composer / cross - discipline musician Jack McNeill, we were in residency at the school for a year, and created Roll Up! - a promenade piece of sensory immersive opera, performed by pupils and professional opera singers in the school across two days.
